Senior Thesis | Blackletter

I spent my senior year of college completely immersed in the art of Blackletter calligraphy. I came to understand that this project not only included learning how to write in a specific "font" with its own unique set of strokes and angles, but also required me to train the steadiness of my hand, and sharpen my abilities to visually control, what we understand in modern type terms, the kerning and leading of my own writing. This project is my proudest work.

All aspects of this book were made by hand, all calligraphic pages meticulously crafted by hand. I utilized our Fabrication lab to create acrylic covers, and individually hole punched each page, and used a custom binding technique to achieve the final look.

During this project I reminisced on the cool books I read as a child, pages that folded out from the confines of the book... why not try that out!

This book comprised of 3 major learning objectives

1) Alphabets

2) Lines & strokes

3) Written sentences

Each section was accompanied by gatefold pages where I took the lessons I learned and made something the eye could marvel at.
